Oral Cancer Exam

An essential part of the training of all dentists and dental hygienists is the identification of atypical sites in the oral cavity. Just as your dermatologist evaluates all your skin surfaces outside you mouth, we will examine the skin surfaces inside it at many of your appointments with us. You will experience this evaluation as part of every examination and dental cleaning. If you become aware of any persistent lumps, bumps, change in color of gum, cheek, tongue or lip surfaces, please bring those to our attention right away. Occasionally a biopsy is recommended. some biopsies can be performed by Drs. McDevitt, Jacquot, or Izarra while others are referred to an oral surgeon. If a site is considered suspicious, you may be referred for evaluation with another doctor.

It also important to note that over 75% of oral cancers are linked with avoidable behaviors such as smoking, tobacco use, and excessive alcohol consumption. Drs. McDevitt, Jacquot, and Izarra can provide you with literature and options about quitting dangerous behaviors such as tobacco use.
