We will be as kind and gentle as possible. The periodontal exam is usually be completed with little or no discomfort.
We will need current periodontal x-rays in order to see disease not otherwise visible. If your referring dentist has taken x-rays, you may request or give permission that they be forwarded to us. We are very aware and sensitive to concerns about exposure to diagnostic radiation and will carefully explain the need for any radiographic imaging.
Since all patients are different, your periodontist must complete your examination before establishing your treatment plan and the fee for care. The fee for periodontal therapy can vary considerably depending on the type of problems and the complexity and the length of treatment. An approximate fee can usually be determined at the initial visit; but on occasion, some initial treatment or further diagnostics must be completed before the final treatment planning can be defined and found to be acceptable to you.. Our philosophy of practice is to treat as conservatively as possible to attain your treatment goals.
Dental insurance policies may cover a portion of your periodontal treatment, as defined by the contract between your carrier and your employer. We have found some of the standardized treatment covered is dated and does not take advantage of the new discoveries science has provided periodontics. For that and other reasons we find when a patient can access pre-tax health reimbursement plans, their percentage of coverage is often enhanced.
The consideration of surgery as a treatment option follows consideration of all therapeutic opportunities. It is common that non-surgical therapy is very beneficial and reduces the extent or degree of surgery that might have otherwise been suggested. Non-surgical strategies may be used to define which sites might continue to be monitored and which might really benefit from appropriate surgery. Except in the rare occurrence of an urgent need or a specifically prescribed procedure by your dentist with which you have already reached understanding and agreement, the decision for and the timing of surgery is yours. Our responsibility is to help you reduce the need for surgery, collaborate with you and your decision about surgery, achieve the most effective outcome and assist your efforts to sustain your success.
The recent advances in periodontal treatment allow us to successfully treat most teeth. Within the context of your personal goals we will help set expectations that help your determine how to value your choices and the probability of achieving and sustaining those goals.
Our office and your dentist will work closely together. If crowns, fillings and/or other dental restorations or services are needed, your dentist will provide them. Regular visits to your dentist are an important part of periodontal maintenance and sustaining your oral health.
Periodontal disease is a progressive, painless infection. Delay can cause you further bone loss and more expense. If your teeth are lost, dentures are never as effective as your own natural teeth.
