The term "plastic surgery" by definition and common use implies a very high level of precision. Over 20 years ago microsurgical instrumentation and techniques were introduced to periodontists. The practice immediately became skilled in the use of these tiny instruments and ultrafine sutures and the very high magnification required. It remains one of the very few microsurgery trained periodontal practices in Georgia. A surgical microscope, virtually identical to those used by eye surgeons, became the essential tool in application of these techniques. Vision specialists have now developed high magnification lens systems for surgical glasses that approach the resolution of the surgical microscope. Many of the improvements in periodontal plastic surgery have come through other microsurgery periodontists with whom the doctors has studied. We find the rate of healing and the outcomes achieved to be very desirable for our patient's experiences.
Grafting of gum tissue to cover exposed roots is first and foremost a health-driven procedure to protect the remaining bone. The goals to improve the appearance of the gums and teeth and to improve the esthetic appeal of a symmetrical gum-line are an application of gum grafting. Though the exact outcome is not completely predictable because the gum tissue that receded was previously attached to bone that is no longer present, this surgery can make a real and pleasing difference. The expectations for a specific surgery will be carefully planned and discussed with you and your dentist.
Sometimes excess gum tissue will cover part of the tooth normally exposed and visible. Although your teeth appear short, they may actually be the proper length. We can correct this by performing the periodontal plastic surgery procedure, crown lengthening. During this procedure, excess gum and bone tissue are reshaped to expose more of the natural tooth. Your smile will be thoroughly analyzed to determine how many and how much of your teeth might show in a pleasing smile. If you determine that would be a desirable condition, then this type of surgery may be your choice.
